a hot cup of christmas

There is something about a hot cup of tea that just tickles my warmest feelings. I guess it reminds me of my childhood. Do you have a special comfort food or treat or drink that instantly evokes a special feeling in you?

For me this is it. Tea. Such a simple, delightful word. Whenever I think of tea, my mind fills up with images of Victorian ladies and horse-drawn carriages and dainty sandwiches.

Every year, on Christmas day I have tea in the afternoon with my family. The table is as pretty as possible with the finest china and linen, decorated with poinsettia, candles & the most fabulous array of food. We serve finger sandwiches and biscuits shaped like reindeer, stars, snowmen… And, of course, the queen of the table is always the Tea Pot. If I ever were grateful to a homely invention, it is to the teapot. Nothing like a graceful teapot pouring steaming tea into a cup to turn an ungainly, clumsy brute into a well-mannered gentleman.

This is one of my favorite Christmas traditions.

Most tea companies make a special tea for Christmas. It's always a different tea, a little spicy with wonderful flavours. Just right for the season and the weather. Today’s main star is… TEA.

Hot spiced tea
Ingredients Spice Tea 007

  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 to 12 whole allspice
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 12 cups water
  • 12 individual tea bags
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup cranberry juice
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice

Directions

  • Place cinnamon sticks, allspice and cloves on a double thickness of cheesecloth. Bring up corners of cloth; tie with a string to form a bag.
  • Place water and spice bag in a large saucepan; bring to a boil. Remove from the heat. Add tea bags; cover and steep for 5 minutes. Discard tea bags and spice bag. Stir in brown sugar until dissolved. Add juices; heat through. Serve warm.

Yield: 3 quarts.

In honour of this ceremony and the warm, cosy feelings it arouses in my British heart, I invite you to join me. Why don’t you throw your own Tea Party this year with friends or family? In order to help you start, I will be giving you some recipes for inspiration.

IT SMELLS LIKE CHRISTMAS

XMASTREE2

It’s nearly that time of the year when bad feelings turn fuzzy, when we want to forget all about the long hours of work and the drudgery that comes with them, and the world becomes a snow-covered basket brimming with promises of good things to come.

It’s that time of the year when school and work and duty and backache and family and timetables and recipes and plane tickets and rush-hour presents become a blurry race into a parade of days when fun is a must and time takes on a new meaning.

Family time. Quality time. Eating time. Maybe a bit of spiritual time thrown in with the current.

It’s that time of the year when one word steps up into the limelight. Sharing. We share our time. Thoughts of each other. Things that convey our feelings for someone. A place in our lives that was forgotten amidst the vortex of everyday life.

Christmas is coming, again.

And I say “again” with all the heart-felt anticipation that a child harbours for Christmas Day or Epiphany when, at the first sight of sunlight, you peek from under a sleepy eyelid to find out what your first winter present is going to be.

What does Christmas mean to you? To me it means days off work, hours of recreation, warm and cozy moments around a table with family and friends, ornaments on a tree, jingle bells, surprises wrapped in wondertinfoil, a beaming face of joy at a gift, shopping lists, dancing till the wee hours.

Of course, it also means that everyone knows you have time to spare for their needs. Your house is invaded by aliens who bellow till your ears bleed, who gobble up every piece of turrón and cake and canapé you painstakingly prepared for hours, and who tear apart the beautifully decked tree with those expensive ornaments you just bought. It means you won’t have a moment for yourself until everyone has had their fill and you’re dropping on the floor out of exhaustion. It means endless hours of ever- the-same conversation with badly dressed people who never comment on your perfect attire. It means hundreds of kilos you can’t seem to know how to part with. It means, well, a lot of things you need to remind you it’s that time of the year, again.

I love Christmas. Don’t you?

it’s all over… till next All Hallow’s Eve

Hey fellows, now that it’s all over for one more year, it’s time to reminisce.

What in the world is that?  Well, if you ask me, it’s just reliving in your mind what is gone in the flesh. So here we are again talking about my favourite subject. One of them at least. I’ve got so many that I’ve lost count.

What exactly did you do for Halloween?

Remains of old pumpkins, wrinkled costumes strewn all through the halls and tummy aches can mean only one thing – it’s just been Halloween!

Did you go trick-or-treating? Or perhaps you couldn’t see what all the fuss was about. Whatever you got up to, let us know. You could still win the prize for “best recipe” photo.

Speaking of witch (which), here is a bunch of photos that illustrates how good it was to celebrate Halloween with all of you.

HALLOWEEN 2010

HALLOWEEN 2010b

HALLOWEEN VAL  My turn now. I had, not one, but two Halloween parties. A proper one with my family and a nasty one (*grin*) with friends of mine. That means I had to do double of everything: double biscuits, double cakes, double popcorn… You get the idea.

Let’s just say you can have a hangover due to more than the usual suspects.

Whet your appetite with these scrumptious photos:

See you in a dark alley.

BONE APPETIT!

Three days till Halloween and counting. And eating...or at least preparing for it.

My plans for this eery, batty, bone-rattling, gruesome, chilling, haunting (gasp for air) weekend include Rotten Teeth (see yesterday's recipe), Flesh'n'Blood (blood-curdling drink), pumpkin pie, Phantom Sausages, Haunting biscuits and lots of decorations.

What do you say to a creamy pumpkin pie? Are you ready to tackle this challenge? If you are, please, please, send us a photo of your great effort at the kitchen.

PUMPKING PIE RECIPE
ingredients:

  1. 450 g/1lb prepared weight pumpkin flesh, cut into 1in/2.5 cm chunks

  2. 2 large eggs plus 1 yolk (use the white for another dish)

  3. 3 oz/75g soft dark brown sugar

  4. 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  5. ½ level teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

  6. ½ tsp ground allspice

  7. ½ tsp ground cloves

  8. ½ tsp ground ginger

  9. 10 fl oz/275 ml double cream

method
  1. Pre-heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.

  2. Use a shop bought sweet crust pastry case, about 9 inch/23 cm diameter and 1½ inches/4 cm deep.

  3. To make the filling, steam the pumpkin then place in a coarse sieve and press lightly to extract any excess water.

  4. Then lightly whisk the eggs and extra yolk together in a large bowl.

  5. Place the sugar, spices and the cream in a pan, bring to simmering point, giving it a whisk to mix everything together. Then pour it over the eggs and whisk it again briefly.

  6. Now add the pumpkin pureé, still whisking to combine everything thoroughly.

  7. Pour the filling into your pastry case and bake for 35-40 minutes, by which time it will puff up round the edges but still feel slightly wobbly in the centre.

  8. Remove the pie from the oven and place the tin on a wire cooling rack. Serve chilled (stored loosely covered in foil in the fridge) with some equally chilled créme fraïche, but warm or at room temperature would be fine.

Now to finish with a bewitching note, here I present you a Halloween joke that's sure to make your friends drop their jaw.

Do you know what happened to the boy and girl vampires?
They loved... in vein.

HAVE A DREADFULLY GOOD HALLOWEEN.

creepy and yummy

Hi, Halloweenies!

Here we go into scrumptious details as promised. I have time for one recipe today, but it’s tested and gobbled up so be brave and try your hand. It’s worth it, said she with a satisfied grin. And a full stomach.

  • 1 large bag of popcorn
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter

directions ----------

Mix the honey and sugar in a small saucepan and bring to a boil.

BOOOOOOOOOOO

Halloween is here again to spook us all for one TERRIBLE night.

If you are hard put to dig up new ideas to celebrate this old, old custom, do not despair. Or then again, do despair! It’s the right mood for this celebration after all.

Les us do all the bloody work for you as we offer inspiration to create a truly frightening yet stylish Halloween party.

Here we go with some spooktacular suggestions:

  • What about a comfy movie night with your best friends and a bowl of devilish popcorn? (popcorn sprayed with ketchup and nuts)
  • Dare to become a chef from Hell with recipes of SPIDER CAKES, SCREAM COOKIES & EYEBALL SOUP. (link)
  • Challenge your DIY powers with this creepy-cute tree decked with pumpkins and spider web as a centerpiece or this spidery candle that will light you through a pitch-black night.  (link, link2)
  • Create a costume with a simple box and a bit of imagination. (link)
  • Tell ghoulish jokes to your friends or total strangers! (link)
  • SOUND EFFECTS.
  • You can record several scary sounds and play it back during the festivities. A very large sheet of poster board or sheet metal makes great thunder. Uncooked rice poured onto a cookie sheet sounds like rain. Crinkle a handful of cellophane for a roaring fire. Snap carrots in half for the sound of breaking bones. To get a good scream you can, well -- scream.

Halloween is one of the year’s biggest holidays for taking pictures – whether snapping shots of that perfect, homemade costume or a panic-inducing fancy dress bought at a shop. So we dare you to send a photo during this week. Photographers of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to submit Halloween-themed photos. The winner of this year’s contest will receive a monster prize… in the flesh.

MUUUUUUHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAMUAHAAHAHAHAHHA MUAHAAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAA (translation: evil laughter).

And soon to come, loads of photos from the real event. Check out our website and this very blog in the next few days.

HAVE A SPOOKY HALLOWEEN!

BACK ON THE HORSE

playlearnWelcome everyone!

Yes, it’s that time of the year when summer is still on our heels but growing thin by the second. Even though we reject the idea of going back to duty (school or work or just daily drudgery), we can find the strength to admit it is for our own good.

Once we believe that, it’s almost fun to come back. Hard, tiring, heart-wrenching fun. Let’s smile then. If we have to start all over again, let’s do it with debonair.

So let me welcome all of you. Let me welcome the children, the mothers, the fathers, the grannies and grandpas, the aunties and uncles, the cousins, the friends, the good, the bad and the ugly, the queens and kings who would rather stay late in bed enjoying breakfast on a silver plate, the sporty and brave who have time to go jogging and do the ironing and read the newspaper before 8 o’clock, the busy who push their baby in their prams rushing through streets like racing tracks, welcome to you and to the tanned turtles on the beach, the lazy who couldn’t finish that hundredth book in a row, the blind bats who spent the whole summer watching Lost recaps, welcome to you all.

LCT IDIOMAS is back! So are you. Let’s rejoice.

SUMMER FUN GALORE

Hey, did you think we were gone? Not so, mates. We are smoothly sailing through long summer days and having fun to boost.

Here I give you some illustrated proof of all the things you can accomplish with a pinch of English and a lot of smiles.

july2010

Best recipe I know of to have fun in summer:

relish every minute

don’t make plans

make on-the-spot plans

swim, run, sleep, eat, dream, read, write, think, don’t think, don’t sweat, get tanned, do something new, smile at a stranger, have a shower, have a foamy bath, read more, travel, draw crazy pictures, make an exotic salad, eat brazil nuts, take a siesta during the hottest hours, toss a ring at a ring game, jump rope, watch a comedy on TV, find out about the largest insects in the world and then have a panic attack, get over your panic attack by watching some tornado videos on youtube, get awed at the wonders of the world, read a bit more, sleep another siesta, relax, don’t relax, do more…

See ya when the summer is over but still lingering in our mosaic minds. Kisses.

COME ALONG, OH LAZY SUMMER DAYS

KIDS are outimage of school and they have the long lazy days of July and August ahead. They could spend their summer days in front of the TV or your children could be using their imaginations to create projects that are a reflection of their own unique talents.

SUMMER TIME WITH ENGLISH

We won’t be getting bored this summer. Here at LCT IDIOMAS  we are having fun all throughout July. Starting next week, our summer courses gather children of all ages for a lot of fun and English activities.

Conversation, games, sport, theatre, arts and crafts, treasure hunts, costume parties…

It’s all here. It’s all good.

Come and join us!

Ready for a challenge?

Is spring fever setting in? I mean the good kind of fever. The kind of energy-infused optimism that flows through your limbs and blows up the blood in your veins. Yeah! It’s the right time, and weather, to start thinking of new projects, new ideas, new everything. This is the moment when you go crazy for great outfits. When you want to impress that shy neighbour with those gorgeous angel eyes. When you feel like reinventing your inner world.

spring

Unlock your creativity. Send us a photo that sums up what spring means to you.

Is it a reborn tree?

Or a puppy newly come into the world of snarling old dogs?

Or a family sharing a picnic?

Or great shows on TV?

Or endless hours of daylight?

Maybe it’s just the beginning of a holiday-steeped mentality.

PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP AND YOUR CAMERA AND SNAP A PHOTO. We are sure to publish it here. Who knows? We might boast of having met you when you become rich and famous.

I’M BOOKED TILL SUMMER

Last week’s event was a total success. Lots of beautiful books are being piled on tables just for our perusal.book3

Are you one of the lucky students who got to listen to Josie reading a story out loud? Oh, it’s fun reading this way. And all those cute pictures. I even saw a dog luring a mouse with a book. These things only happen in… well, in Book Land, of course.

Come and take a look at all the pictures we’ve taken of the event. Everything is on the web.

By the way, what are you reading nowadays? What? WHAT? You dare say that you’re not reading anything at all? Nothing? What about a magazine? A comic? A tiny ad on a wall, maybe. A doctor’s prescription, perhaps?

Phew, at least you’re reading something right now. ME. Well, that’s not enough, let me tell you. So go find a book right away. Anyhow, I’d love to know what you’ve been reading so far. A Top Ten list of your favourite books this year. Just to tease your appetite, you may find some interesting links on the right side of the blog. And there you can also check what books we girls are reading at this moment. Funny? Dead boring? Plain cool?

You decide.

I can read you like a book

HEY FELLOWS, BOOK DAY is coming!

bookworld2

We are so proud to usher in this beautiful celebration of all that is creative and wonderful about words. Next April, 23rd is a day to talk about books, reading, the beauty of words and how we can weave them into a tapestry that we can see and feel through our imagination.

Please welcome this year’s Book Day joining us in a little book party of our own. Bring a book you have at home. Mind you, it must be written in English. For a little while, we would like to set up a library at LCT IDIOMAS.

If each one of you brings an English book, we can all together make an eclectic, colourful and unique mosaic of what books and reading them mean to us as a collective mind.

BRING A BOOK to the academy. Here you will find that many of you classmates have already started bringing in their precious books. That way we will be able to do some reading all together. As if we were a big family bound like books by our love for them. Teachers have brought books from their countries of origin. Come and have a look!

Let’s make our own ENGLISH

LIBRARY.

Read you soon.

BREATH IN THE PERFUME OF LOVE.

A WINTER TO STAY

Folks, winter is staying with us for six long, dreary weeks.

And how can we know this? Ask the groundhog. ground-hog-day

Yep, I said the groundhog. Don’t you believe me? Well, apparently people from the USA believe this cute rodent can tell winter from spring in a split second. Or at least on one particular day. The legend goes like this.

Groundhog Day is celebrated in the U.S. each year on February 2nd. On this day in mid-winter, the groundhog awakens from a long winter's nap, and goes outside of his den to see if he sees his shadow. This tradition is big on an otherwise cold and dreary mid-winter's day.

According to legend, if the groundhog sees his shadow (a sunny morning), there will be six more weeks of winter. He then returns to his den and goes back to sleep. If however, he does not see his shadow (cloudy days), he plays around outside of his hole for a while. If he does not see his shadow, spring is just around the corner.

What do you think about this tradition? Superstition? Folly? Midwife’s tale? Or good enough to take into account? Your calling.

Say hello to Punxsutawney Phil, the sleepy, weather-predicting celebrity among groundhogs.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome, everyone! We’re so happy to be back again. Hope your holidays were awesome. Did you get wonderful gifts on Epiphany’s Day? The Three Wise men broke their poor camels’s backs with the load of joy brought to you on the 6th of January? I bet!

snowymonday

What a way to start the school week! No school, buckets of snow everywhere. Did you enjoy the extra day? We surely didn’t. It was freezing that morning.

Now is the time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It's a time to reflect on the changes we want to make and resolve to follow through on those changes. Did your New Year resolutions make our top ten list?

  1. Study more
  2. Watch less T.V.
  3. Lose that extra weight
  4. Quit procastinating (I’ll do it tomorrow, mum!)
  5. Enjoy life more!
  6. Learn something new
  7. Read lots of books (well, that might be my own idea…)
  8. Spend less money on clothes, sweets, extremely expensive games…
  9. Help others ( people or animals)
  10. Get organized

What are your ideas on the matter? Pick the keyboard and click away your own resolutions. We’ll be waiting for your emails!
